KULA OPEN POEM 2018
written by Ken Kula
It all began in ‘83, in honor of our Gramp,
The Kula Open was first played to crown a Kula Champ

And Mid Pines was our course of choice, where we all learned to play.
A course cut in a Willow Grove, by Louis Dingeldey.

Then years went by, our course was sold, The Open’s future dark,
“Go west, young man!” we all were told, so we Walked in a Park.

Now Dan’s and Gary’s streaks of 3 were great, and some say dandy.
The only other champs we’ve had are Mike, Mark, Bob and Randy.

Then further west, the Carlisle Course was played for just 2 year.
Mike and Gary were the champs, 2 greats among their peers.

I didn’t win the first year there, and this could be a factor.
In just one swing, my chance was gone, my first shot hit a tractor.

In ‘17 the Open moved, “Last call for Astorhurst!”
We’ve played 4 courses, three have closed, the Kulas must be cursed.

The Golf Club in North Olmsted is where we played this year.
And Dan cannot win longest drive, because he lives so near.

There’s Gary, Susan, Sara, Bob, and Abby, also Brad.
And brothers Tony, Ralph and Len, and Ben who is their dad.

And Dan, and Mike, and Jessica, and also MaryLou
And Dani, Mark, and T.K. Foxx, and Greg, and Matt times two.

And Randy, Ken and Brittany, and Jeff, and also Ryan.
To rhyme the players’ names is hard, you know I am really tryin’.

Samantha, Jason, Bri, and Rob, and Debbie, also Dale.
Kelsey, Kevin, Jackie too, and last of all there’s Gail.

I think I’ve mentioned all who’ve played, if any I have missed -
Don’t blame me, I got the names from Randy’s website list.

I thought the poem had all our names, but really it did not.
Courtney was the only one I guess that I forgot

Guess again, there’s some more names I also have forgotten,
Colin, Lisa, and Marie, that makes me feel so rotten!

Rebecca, Jean, and Terri, too; who haven’t played just yet.
And don’t forget the final 3, Kim, Allee, Antoinette.

Un-Kulas I will try to name, there’s more than just a few.
Bob & Bob & Chris & Claire & Don & Don & Drew.

Mike & Ken & Kaye & Steve & 2 guys both named Gary,
Reggie, Rich, and his son Rich, and then cartwheeling Terry.

Sean & Tim & Nuria, a Brian we have had.
And last the un-named golfer who is known as “Kierstin’s Dad”.

Players, courses, things have changed, for almost every Open.
But we’ll continue for some time, it’s what we all are hopin’.

But there have been some constants too, from Open 1 through now.
We take a moment to thank those whose money they endow.

For prizes that are won each year, by almost every Kula,
Our many thanks to Jean and Ralph, for putting in the moolah.

Although our Mom has never golfed, prize cash she gave a lot.
In her honor, we have named this trophy Jean’s Pin Shot.

In basketball, the net is high, in hockey it’s much lower.
Ralph’s favorite sport is played on ice, his golf game is much slower.

So we’ll combine the two for him, it’s really no surprise,
To honor him this trophy's now Ralph Kula’s Low Net Prize.

In ‘91 the Seniors played, someone won 9 of 10.
It wasn’t Tony and not Ralph, but older brother Len.

Eleven times he won the crown, we’ll honor him, you bet!
Len Kula’s Senior Trophy now, is what the winners get!

I thought the poem had all our names, but really it did not.
Courtney was the only one I guess that I forgot.

Now Susan said I can’t use “Rolph” to form a rhyme with “golf”.
Next time don’t tell me what to do, and write the poem yoursolf!
