In the summer of 1983, while on a trip to Salt Fork State Park, a few members of the Kula family decided to hold a competition. They played 18 holes at Salt Fork Golf Course. Shortly after they returned, Kenny presented Gary with the 1st place trophy and Randy with the 2nd place plaque at Grandma and Grandpa Kula's house. They decided that day to schedule an annual golf tournament for the Kula Family. Later that year, the 1st Kula Open was contested at Mid Pines Golf Course in Solon, Ohio. After a couple of years, the family decided to hold the Kula Open on the Sunday before Labor Day every year. From its humble beginnings in 1983 until today, the Kula Open has grown from 18 holes of golf to a weekend that included a miniature golf competition, a 9-hole scramble and a family picnic with an awards presentation, which includes trophies, green jackets, and championship rings.
