TRIBUTE TO MID PINES GOLF COURSE
written by Ken Kula
Willow Grove, Dingleday, Trivisonno's, Mid Pines, The Barn, Cow Pasture, Pig Sty. These are just a few of the many official names that have been used to describe this unique course. While each name comes up short in capturing the essence of this beautiful course, one name does intrigue golf historians. "Dingleday", the name after the "Willow Grove Era", is most unusual. Historians believe this course could be the birthplace of golf itself. Mid Pines is possibly the site on which Abner Dingleday knocked a hunk of goose poop, with a crooked stick, over a small lake and into a snake hole- thereby inventing modern golf. Few have played the game as well as Abner since. One legend states that Abner, in memory of the first golf balls, would only use balls marked number two.

It is this belief that is the basis for the ongoing restoration project of returning the course to its original state. Therefore, the next few years will see extreme measures taken, such as: the removal of no goose poop (some could be Abner's balls), the planting of no new grass to interfere with the original dead grass, the plush restrooms being removed (use the rough, please), and the grass cutters being replaced by 2 cows, 3 goats, and the Kula pitching wedges. To help fund this project, please consider purchasing one or more of the original Dingleday doughnuts (to be used as paperweights) on sale in the clubhouse.
When this project is completed, few golfers will be able to forget the breathtaking view from the first tee as they look out at one of the most gorgeous golf courses on this man's earth, Grantwood.

Beside the historic qualities of Mid Pines, it is the Kulas' love of golf that brings them back each year. They love golf too much to subject a real course to the entire family on one day. And where else is one given the opportunity to play winter rules year round? Where else can you blast out of the sand, while already on the green? Where else can you feel like a golf pro because almost everyone else who plays the course is so pathetic? Mid Pines should be recognized by the Golfer Hall of Fame as the ultimate course where one can learn how to golf, or learn that they can't learn how to golf.

One final thought, maybe everyone of you should consider that possibly the course is in the shape it's in because it is one of the few courses that lets players like you play on it.
