ODE TO THE KULA OPEN
written by Bob Kula for the 25th Kula Open in 2007
The history of the Open; I don’t know where to start;
Repeated time and time again; We know it all by heart.
Now before the Kula Open; In ’82, just for fun;
We had a competition; I remember Markie won.

Next the golf was at Salt Fork; A number of Kula’s were there;
Gary beat the competition; But, honestly, no one cared.

So we needed something formal; Resembling the P.G.A.;
We had to pick a regular time; We needed a special day.

Now Labor Day was Willowick; Jerry Lewis, and baked beans;
Playing sports from dawn to dusk; With Merle and Magazines.
Yes, Monday was all taken; So we studied things some more;
We had a good solution; We picked the day before.

The course was a no-brainer; We had to pick our favorite;
Astrohurst? Right down the hill? Heck, no. Mid Pines was it.

It was Willow Grove, then Dingleday; And finally Mid Pines;
The front, the back they looked the same; They were identical nines!

With crab grass and the goose poop; The course was really ugly;
We’re sure the course groundskeeper; Did not answer to Frank Pugely.

But this was still the Kula’s course; It’s the only one we had;
You never forget the firsttime; You were taken there by your Dad.

So the Kula Open started; On a date in ’83;
For anyone named Kula; It was the only place to be.

We played 18 that first year; And we had a four way tie;
Michael won in sudden death; From a ridiculous lie.

Every year there’s competition; The final four in a fight;
For all the great statistics; Check out Randy’s cool Website.

Now one big thing that happened; Was the closing of The Barn;
Our loveable Cow Pasture; Being taken from us Darn.

Len would have purchased old Mid Pines; If his name was Larry Dolan;
The four words that he hates the most; Are “The Signature of Solon.”

So having to replace Mid Pines; We didn’t know if we could;
The closest Pigsty we could find; Was a place called Emerald Woods.

Although they have 5 different nines; And really some of them are nice;
Kula’s can’t play 18 holes; So we play the same 9 twice.
A beautiful green jacket; Was purchased at a thrift store;
It must have shrunk along the way; It doesn’t fit us anymore.

Wooden trophies made by hand; We certainly saved on cost;
They aren’t presented anymore; Cuz through the years they all got lost.

With stomach pains on the 1st tee; And a bout with diarrhea;
Kenny found that Pepto Bismol; Was really no panacea.

Bob competed early on; And in ’85 he won;
But of all the money given out; He has won exactly none.

Ken and Mark, they have a streak; They’ve never missed an Open.
But Winning title number one; They still are each a hopin’.

One day our Susan fell in love; Dan asked to marry her;
It’s Why the trophy sometimes reads; Not “Kula,” but “Harriger.”

Randy’s game progressed so much; He’d won title number four;
I really thought by the age of 50; He’d be on the Senior Tour.

Ralph did sink a very long putt; It was 60 feet, some say;
But it’s no fun retrieving putters; From a thousand yards away.

Gary’s lead is getting slim; He’s still up seven to six;
Grandma Kula must be proud; Cuz he’s never making tricks.

Wives and kids have also played; Some more regularly;
Mostly Gail and Mary Lou; And Matt and Gregory.

Through the years there’ve been non-Kula’s; But they play just for fun;
Reggie, Donald, Rich, and Terry; And I know I’m missing some.

Now some of us have moved away; To Vegas and to Tampa;
It really wasn’t long ago; That we’d all play golf with Grampa.
So we miss the Vegas Kula’s; And Tony Sr.’s unmatched socks;
And exploding golf balls rising; Off the clubs of T.K. Foxx.
And so we've hit a special year; the historic 25;
The Kula Open goes on and on; It's what keeps us alive.
